Many a comic book movie fan briefly got butterflies in their stomach this week, when the news broke that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – which has begun its theatrical run outside the U.S. – features a button scene (read: mid-credits scene) that is actually a promo for X-Men: Days of Future Past, which arrives in the States just a few weeks after the Spidey sequel. However, before everyone could get too excited about Sony and 20th Century Fox taking the first baby step towards a crossover with the respective studios’ Marvel properties, the truth came out: it’s really part of an agreement worked out between Sony and Fox, so that Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb could return on the sequel (paving the way for him to direct Part 3 as well). Nonetheless, the idea of a film crossover between all/some of the quadrants of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe – Marvel Studios’ shared universe, Sony’s Spider-Man universe, and Fox’s X-Men and Fantastic Four universes – is something worth talking abut, especially as the aforementioned studios move forward with their plans to grow their superhero franchises horizontally (read: spinoffs), as well as vertically (read: sequels). Our Rob Keyes broke down the subject in depth earlier this week, but as always it’s the executives and producers behind these comic book adaptations that will be the ones who can get this ball rolling properly down the ramp. Spider-Man franchise producers Avi Arad and Matthew Tolmach previously said – in the days after The Avengers stormed the box office but before Amazing Spider-Man rebooted the webslinger’s film series – that “Everything is possible,” as far as crossovers featuring Peter Parker and other non-Sony owned Marvel superheroes are concerned. (Oscorp Tower nearly made a cameo in The Avengers‘ New York after all.) However, the game has changed over the couple years since then, which partly explains why Arad and Tolmach are now being a bit more firm with discouraging fans from getting excited about Spidey teaming with the likes of Captain America and/or Wolverine, among others (following the Amazing Spider-Man 2/Days of Future Past news this week) – similar to what Marvel Studios’ head Kevin Feige did 5-6 months ago. “I think I’m probably a little bit of the militant here. I think it will take a moment in which we’ve run out of ideas. There’s so much to tell about Spider-Man. There’s so much to tell about the Sinister Six. The relationship between Spider-Man and Venom will bring a whole other world in… Peter Parker is unique; he’s really different. He’s not an Avenger. He’s not an X-Man. He’s unique and we revere that… We don’t need [a crossover] yet. Sony has Amazing Spider-Man 3 slated to arrive in 2016, followed by spinoff films Sinister Six and Venom, which is what Arad is referring to here; most of the producer’s recent interviews to promote Amazing Spider-Man 2 have, in fact, been as focused around the “whole other world” that the sequel lays the groundwork for. Similarly, as we discussed in a recent article concerning the potential Sinister Six lineup, Venom might be the recipient of a multi-film character arc; one that begins with an introduction in Amazing Spider-Man 3, Venom joining and then rejecting the other Spider-Man villains in Sinister Six, before Alex Kurtzman’s Venom solo feature depicts the title character as a proper anti-hero protagonist. That is to say: it’s possible the Spider-Man film series will jump right from Andrew Garfield’s run as Peter Parker into the Venom saga, before continuing onward without an extended break into Amazing Spider-Man 4 (which could potentially feature someone other than Garfield as Spidey). So long as the ambitious plans for the future of the Spider-Man franchise – be they similar to the idea outlined here or not – don’t fall apart (knock on wood), there won’t really be a need and/or space for a crossover with other Marvel properties, as Arad points out. “You know Avi always refers to that question as a stunt. If you were to do that, you know, Spider-Man in the Avengers is a stunt. And I get why everybody – you know, fans and audience members and movie goers – I understand it… When you think about the Sinister Six and you think about Venom and you think about Carnage and you think Spider-Man in whatever way you want in association with those movies, they feel like they’re built for Spider-Man. Like that’s where his story needs to go and wants to go and it has to be about more than a stunt. “Stunts can be cool but it’s also a business, and so the other side of the answer is they’re owned by different companies. And there’s a ton left in Sony’s world; there’s a lot of business left because there’s a lot of story left. So for them to want to take this character and put it with Marvel and Disney is a huge undertaking and probably, as Avi’s saying, isn’t necessary until you feel like, ‘Wow, we’re sort of out of ideas. What should we do?’ And we’re far from out of ideas. Certainly Avengers had the potential to be the sort of “stunt” that Tolmach is referring to here, as does the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past; a crossover of sorts, which brings together the cast members of the X-Men present-day trilogy and the X-Men: First Class series cast in the same movie. Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon found a way to bring together Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in a narrative that was satisfying on its own terms, while the hope is director Bryan Singer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg’s film adaptation will do justice by the acclaimed Days of Future Past comic storyline from Chris Claremont. If Spider-Man joining forces with the other Avengers, X-Men, and/or Fantastic Four is handled in an equally capable fashion from a creative perspective, then a crossover would be welcome indeed, no matter whether or not the Spider-Man producers have “run out of ideas” by that point. Okay that’s ONE death that is cannon in the story. lets see what else, Captain Stacey dies as he is willingly trying to help Spiderman who was busy trying to stop a biochemical weapon which would’ve messed things up for a lot of new Yorkers. AverageMovieGoers 1 hour agoAlthough this ‘crossover’ thing is a fanboy dream coming true, personally I hope they don’t do it (unless the rights are in one place). I’ve said before in another thread, I’m not too keen on the universe built for the X-Men and Spider-man so far, that’s why I can only see merging these universes with the Marvel Cinematic would do more harm (as in plotholes, studio issues, etc) than good. Just let them play in their own worlds for now. Besides there are still other Avengers (Ms Marvel, Black Panther, Doc Strange, YellowJacket, etc) who need to come to the big screen before they are running out of option to let Wolverine, Beast and Spider-man join the roster. For several years to come, no need to crossover studio just to add these guys, though once again, it would be a fanboys/girls dream come true. Goldilocks 1 hour agoI like a big huge Smorgasboard-style feast, a bountiful and burgeoning buffet, as much as the next guy and maybe even more, but just because I would probably like to sample more tasty viands than my stomach can endure, does not mean we have to use every ingredient in the kitchen to prepare every recipe to create a tasty victual, delicacy, or nummy-yummy-woo-woo! In other words, avoid the indigestion of too many characters spoiling the broth. There are a number of cross-overs I would like to see, yes indeed, but it is a move to be approached with caution, so the screen is not cluttered with characters on either the good-guy or bad-guy side. As the article said, there is so much more to be told in the individual characters’ or teams’ sagas, before we create a giant extravaganza mish-mash. Don’t get me wrong, I am not against cross-overs per se. But let’s not make every meal a blossuming banquet; there is something to be said about prudent moderation. Dazz 52 minutes agoI’m glad they don’t cross over at the moment because honestly, I like the MMU and I like the new Spider-Man flicks and I’d prefer them to remain separate for now. They should only cross over when Disney have established their main NYC heroes and Sony have completely blown open their Spider-Man’s world with more characters included over the next few films. Right now though, both studios have their own plans that need to be followed through before even considering allowing Spider-Man to meet The Avengers and vice versa. ACW 007 39 minutes agoOn a more personal note, it was the Sony Spider-Man films that brought me to read The Amazing Spider-Man from the beginning. Yeah, I was 7 when “Spider-Man” came out in theaters, it was my 1st superhero theater experience. And I loved it, so much so that it brought me to read the original comics. 12 years later, I’m 19 and Spider-Man is still in my head like it was in 2002. That movie alone impacted me more so than any other superhero movie, in fact the same feeling for “The Avengers” didn’t even come close. I guess what I’m trying to say is this: Sony has made a good run off of the character ever since they’ve had him, he doesn’t need to be with The Avengers or X-Men because he’s holding up against them by himself. Science EditorWhen cancers become resistant to the drugs used to treat them, it has become possible – at least in principle – to understand the cause of that resistance through sequencing, and if a drug exists that is effective against cells with the mutation, to change a patient's treatment accordingly. But a better strategy might be to prevent resistance from developing at all.At the recent annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, Robert Beckman, a former Merck & Co. Inc. executive who is the founder of Onco-Mind LLC, argued that cancer treatment needs to become more strategic."In chess, we have very complex strategies designed to win," he told the audience. "With cancer patients our strategies aren't as complex."Not that Beckman doesn't understand why. In cancer chess, "there are so many thousand pieces that we are lucky if we can just identify them all."But the unfortunate consequence is that current treatment strategies bear more resemblance to tennis than chess – serve as hard as you can, and then focus on the ball that is coming over the net right now, rather than taking a moment to consider the future.Beckman argues that such a strategy is short-sighted. It can be more important, he said, to "focus on the prevention of resistance as opposed to treating the tumor you see."MATHEMATICAL MODELDuring a stint at Princeton University's Institute for Advanced Studies Beckman and his colleagues published a mathematical modeling study of 3 million virtual patients, testing whether there were drug regimens that could improve the long-term success at keeping tumors at bay than current standards of care. They found such regimens for a third of their virtual cases."If you understand the underlying evolutionary dynamics and think ahead, you get different recommendations" for treatment, he told BioWorld Insight. "And counterintuitive recommendations may be beneficial." In one striking case, the treatment suggested by the model as the best way to prevent resistance in the long term would have allowed slow growth of the tumor in the short term.Convincing an Institutional Review Board, the FDA, or the patients themselves that the best thing for a patient is to let their tumor grow slowly for now while you take care of resistance that has not yet arisen will take more than modeling data. "A large body of data would have to be accumulated before you could do a clinical trial on this," he said.Beckman is now working on testing some of the suggestions made by the mathematical algorithms in cell cultures and animal models. Ultimately, the first such clinical trial would probably be on already FDA-approved agents combined or sequenced in different ways.Such sequencing is one example of a more general principle, namely, that the dosing schedule of drugs has an impact on how well they work.Larry Norton at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York has done a great deal of work on such scheduling. He was a pioneer of the idea that dose-dense scheduling, that is, administering the chemotherapy more frequently at lower doses rather that less frequently at higher doses, improved survival.Norton said that ultimately, personalized dosing schedules will become a part of personalized medicine just as much as targeted therapies."We knew empirically in the '70s that schedule was important," he told BioWorld Insight. By looking at the effects of chemotherapy in day-to-day detail, Norton and colleagues showed that when a drug is given over a two-week period, "efficacy occurs by day eight or 10 . . . Most of the second week was not effective, and was causing nothing but toxicity."In fact, he said, "The single worst thing you can do is constant exposure."Much of Norton's work has been done on chemotherapies, but his team has shown that the same principles hold for the targeted agents. Everolimus "should not be given continuously, lapatinib should not be given continuously."The reason is that "every agent that is not 100 percent effective induces its own mechanism of resistance," he said. "The cells that are not killed are able to defend themselves by upregulating other mechanisms."IT TAKES TIME"But," he added, "that takes time."And so, by giving cells breaks from drugs at the right time, there is no incentive or time for cells to develop such resistance mechanisms, which often make them grow more slowly.Norton said that repeated cycles of treatment can take care of those tumor cells that were not killed the first time around. "If you do it right, my expectation is that ultimately you can kill them all.""Physics tells us the same thing," he said. "Imagine being in a pool, up to your chest in water, and walking across. If you take one step and pause, and another step and pause, it's pretty easy to get across the pool. Whereas if you try to go as fast as possible, you will induce resistance and it will become much harder."While preventing resistance is the best option, it may not always be a realistic one.Using drug combinations up front is a big part of what has turned HIV from death sentence into chronic illness. But cancer is more complex than HIV.Gideon Bollag is the CEO of Plexxikon Inc., the developer of BRAF inhibitor Zelboraf (vemurafenib). Zelboraf is a targeted therapy that prolongs survival in melanoma, for a time. But ultimately, patients become resistant to the drug in a multitude of ways. There are "at least half a dozen prominent resistance mechanisms," Bollag told BioWorld Insight, along with additional minor players. "And so it's hard to standardize" treatments in a way that prevents resistance."Will there be a single agent that will combine with a BRAF inhibitor to prevent resistance?" he asked. "It's unlikely."But there might ultimately be several such strategies. Clinical trials combining BRAF with MEK inhibition have shown some promise – somewhat surprisingly, since MEK is in the same pathway as BRAF and "it wasn't predicted in the beginning that targeting the same pathway twice would give you a lot of synergy."Another possibility is to combine BRAF inhibition – or, probably, other targeted therapies – with immunotherapy. Though the initial attempts to combine Zelboraf with cancer immunotherapy Yervoy proved too toxic, Bollag said, "everyone is hopeful" that it will be possible to develop such a combination.Immunotherapy in general has high hopes riding on it for being relatively resistant to resistance – because, like tumors themselves, the immune system's response to them can evolve over time.Speaking at last year's American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting, Suzanne Topalian, principal investigator on studies of Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.'s immunotherapy nivolumab told the audience that resistance to immunotherapies can also occur, and is more likely the more targeted those therapies are.But Topalian's prediction was that broad targeting of immunotherapies could ultimately forestall resistance by cutting off cancer's escape routes.A "properly educated immune system," she said, "will be able to keep up with tumors. Gox, once the world's biggest bitcoin exchange, filed for bankruptcy protection in Japan last month, saying it may have lost nearly half a billion dollars worth of the virtual coins due to hacking into its computer system. According to Monday's court filings, the subpoena did not specify topics for discussion. In the court filings, Karpelès' lawyers asked the court to delay the bankruptcy deposition to May 5, 2014 but said that Mt. Gox could not guarantee that Karpeles would attend that either. Here we look how to tap into the incredible capability of the PID to minimize batch cycle time and startup time and to maximize production capacity, flexibility, and efficiency while reducing disruption to utility, raw material, and reagent systems. Also detailed is a simple method to compensate for dead time and to eliminate limit cycles. Feedforward control can be used to improve regulatory control and optimization by preemptive correction or coordination of process control and valve position control. The feedforward signal gain and dynamic compensation should be designed to provide a correction in the process at the same point and same time as the disturbance. A dead time block and lead-lag block is generally all that is needed for this dynamic compensation of feedforward signals. Given an error in timing is inevitable, preferably the feedforward signal arrives late rather than early in order to prevent inverse response. The most common feedforward signal is flow because of production rate changes and because nearly all fast and large disturbances originate as flow rather than composition or temperature disturbances. To attain the process flows on the process flow diagram (PFD), the manipulated flow is ratioed to a wild or leader flow. In most cases, the feedforward is the primary feed flow. A ratio station is used to provide the operator with the ability to set the desired ratio and see the actual ratio. The process PID provides a feedback bias correction to the manipulated flow. The actual ratio displayed is the corrected manipulated flow divided by the feedforward flow. For more details on the implementation of ratio control see ISA Interchange 4/18/2014 post “Tip#93 Use a Viewable and Adjustable Flow Ratio with a Feedforward Summer. Intelligent integral action is the key to preventing oscillations. The suspension of integral action when final control elements are not moving (e.g. deadband and resolution limits) and measurements are not updating (e.g. communication failure, wireless default update rate, and analyzer cycle time), will stop oscillations and reset windup. The slowing down of integral action when secondary loops or final control elements are slow to respond will prevent the burst of oscillations from large and fast disturbances and setpoint changes. A signal selection block chooses the lowest or highest of outputs from override PID controllers to honor constraints. Override process controllers prevent violation of process variable constraints. Override valve position controllers prevent violation of control valve position constraints by keeping the control valve position at the most desirable throttle range. Output limits serve as a backup. Intelligent integral action and feedforward action are keys to a fast smooth override response for process protection and optimization. For more details on process optimization see the ISA Interchange 3/7/2014 post “Tip #97: Use Valve Position Control to Optimize Process Efficiency and Capacity. Dead time compensation can be simply implemented by the addition of a dead time block in the external reset feedback signal (PID+qo). This PID achieves the about the same performance as a Smith Predictor without having to set a predictor model gain and time constant. The dead time setting must always be within +5% and -25% of the actual dead time. The PID reset time must be significantly decreased toward the limit of the error or module execution time to see an improvement in control. If the reset time is not decreased, the performance is worse than if there was no dead time compensation. Overestimates of the dead time will lead to fast oscillations whereas low estimates just cause a loss of performance advantage. This is the opposite effect for the tuning of the PID where an overestimate of dead time causes sluggish response and an underestimate causes an oscillatory response. Contrary to popular opinion the improvement by dead time compensation is greatest for lag dominant rather than dead time dominant loops. Ironically, lag dominant loops (low dead time to time constant ratio) can have a high controller gain and have less of a need for dead time compensation. The enhanced PID developed for wireless that suspends integral action when there are no measurement updates can simplify the tuning for at-line and off-line analyzers. If the cycle time is much larger than 63% process response time, the reset time can be set as small as the process dead time and the PID gain can be set as large as the inverse of the open loop steady state gain for self-regulating processes. The tuning is not as simple for integrating processes and the improvement is not as dramatic but the enhanced PID adds a significant degree of robustness. The advantages and rules also pertain to large wireless update times on fast processes. While the control is more robust and setpoint response much faster by the enhanced PID, the peak error and integrated error for unmeasured load disturbances is increased due to the increase in total loop dead time by amount that is 1½ times the analyzer cycle time and ½ of the wireless update time. Use feedforward control to give preemptive action for large and fast disturbances. Use ratio and bias and gain stations to provide flow ratio control with feedback bias correction and the actual flow ratio viewable and desired flow ratio accessible by operations. Enable startup on ratio control without feedback correction until the process (e.g. distillation column) reaches operating condition. Provide dynamic compensation of feedforward signals by dead time and lead-lag blocks to give the right feedforward timing for disturbances. If open loop tests cannot be done or the process response is complex (e.g. high order or recycle effects), integrating, or runaway, the dead time and lead-lag times can be adjusted based on oscillation patterns observed. Ensure the feedforward correction does not arrive too soon causing an inverse response that can result in the feedforward doing more harm than good. If the feedback correction will unavoidably arrive late, decrease the feedforward gain to prevent a secondary oscillation and undershoot that result from feedback control having already done some of the correction. Use output tracking or remote output to schedule output changes for open loop backup to protect equipment or bang-bang control to minimize batch cycle times. Use a rate limit on valve, VSD, or flow loop setpoints (move suppression) with external reset feedback to the primary PID (e.g. composition, pH, or temperature) manipulating these setpoints to prevent disruption to utility, raw material, and reagent systems from high PID gain or rate time settings or bang-bang control. Use intelligent integral action via integral deadband, external reset feedback, and/or an enhanced PID developed for wireless to prevent oscillations from split range discontinuities, deadband, resolution or threshold sensitivity limits, coated electrodes, slow secondary loops or final control elements, communication failures, and large wireless update times and analyzer cycle times. If the wireless update time or analyzer cycle time is much greater than the 63% process response time, use an enhanced PID to suspend integral action between measurement updates and increase the PID gain toward a maximum gain that is the inverse of the open loop steady state gain for self-regulating processes. Use an innovative use of split range and feedforward control to help a valve position controller deal with large and fast disturbances with parallel large and small valves to achieve best resolution and threshold sensitivity and rangeability. Use override control to honor process variable and valve position constraints. Use up and down setpoint rate limits with intelligent integral action to provide a directional move suppression to enable a slow approach to an optimum or a split range point and a fast getaway for abnormal operation and to prevent safety instrumentation system (SIS) activation. If the dead time can always be accurately set within +5% and -25% of actual dead time, add a dead time block in the external reset feedback signal path and decrease the reset time by a factor of 4 or more to improve performance. Use setpoint feedforward to reduce the time to reach setpoint (rise time) when the initial step change in output from a setpoint change is less than 50% of the final change due to PID tuning and structure. Move up to model predictive control when the feedforward and feedback dynamics are complex and multivariable and the optimization involves more than one objective. Opinions Apr. 19, 2014 - 06:26AM JST ( 0 )SAN FRANCISCO/HONG KONG — Weibo Corp executives on April 17 toasted the Chinese social media firm’s debut at Nasdaq’s New York headquarters. Hours earlier in Beijing, Charles Xue, a Chinese-American venture capitalist and prominent Weibo user, celebrated a different kind of coming-out: his release after eight months in jail. The timing of the two events, though coincidental, highlights the fundamental challenge for Shanghai-based Weibo: progressing from being a microblogging phenomenon in China to becoming an entrenched member of the international social media industry. Xue’s arrest for soliciting prostitutes stemmed from a government campaign launched last autumn to clamp down on online dissent, political analysts claim. Now, as Weibo celebrates its warm reception on international financial markets, its conflicts with censors at home raise the question of whether the firm known as the “Twitter of China” may eventually be derailed by government interference. Over the past year, a series of detentions of influential online commentators may have hurt Weibo’s user numbers, some researchers say. A study released in January by Britain’s Telegraph newspaper and East China Normal University in Shanghai claimed that the number of Weibo posts have fallen as much 70 percent since its peak in 2012, after the government required users to display their real names to post content. However, the company’s regulatory filings said that monthly active users have grown for eight straight quarters, including a 34% gain to 144 million in the quarter ending last month. “Weibo has to answer to two different bosses: one is the [Chinese Communist] Party and one is the stockholders,” said Min Jiang, a professor of communication studies at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte who studies Chinese Internet issues. Jiang said the Chinese government enacted a series of policies - requiring real names on social media in early 2012 and introducing new laws prohibiting “rumor-mongering” last September - after the Facebook- and Twitter-fueled Arab Spring protests swept the Middle East. “Especially after the Arab Spring there has been a top-down push to implement policies that have a real impact on the user population,” Jiang said. Chinese officials have argued the necessity of containing malicious rumors and Internet defamation in order to uphold social order in the world’s most populous country. In its prospectus distributed to potential investors, Weibo described the new online speech laws as a risk. “The implementation of this newly promulgated judicial interpretation may have a significant and adverse effect on the traffic of our platform and discourage the creation of user generated content,” it said. Weibo spokesman Matthew Lindberg said the company could not immediately respond to questions about censorship. On its face, the opportunity for Weibo remains enormous, with China boasting more than 600 million Internet users. But while Weibo could see healthy growth, Mizuho analyst Marvin Lo said the public relations effect from censorship controversies could hurt, especially as Weibo competes against Weixin - the messaging app operated by rival Tencent Holdings Ltd that has gained enormous popularity partly because it is private by nature. Weixin, known as WeChat internationally, may now have about 400 million users, according to forecasts by Barclays. Its revenue may reach almost $500 million this year, Barclays said. The China Internet Network Information Center, a state-run agency tracking Internet statistics, said in its annual report released in January that it saw a decline in social media use, particularly among microblogs like Weibo. The agency noted that while growth in Weibo dropped 9% in 2013, mobile messaging services saw explosive growth, with apps such as WeChat logging more than 78 million new users. Though it remains unprofitable, Weibo boosted revenues almost three-fold to $188.3 million in 2013 from $65.9 million in 2012, while its net loss fell to $38.1 million in 2013 from $102.5 million the previous year. Still, many analysts argue that Weibo will remain competitive precisely because its public broadcast platform differs from messaging tools like WeChat. In the U.S. market, Twitter has established itself as an influential social media company even though messaging apps such as Whatsapp - acquired by Facebook for $19 billion - enjoy higher user adoption and engagement rates. In an interview with Reuters Television on Thursday, Weibo Chairman Charles Chao said Weibo and Weixin could both thrive. “If you really look at the features of these two applications they’re very different,” Chao said. “Weibo is more public, more media-centric. WeChat is more a private network, more communication-centric. A lot of people in China use both. They are quite complementary to each other. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have closed dozens of Weixin accounts in recent months, according to media reports in China, suggesting that content shared on the closed messaging platform has not escaped official scrutiny. Xue, who confessed to the prostitution charges, was released on bail this week on grounds of serious illness, the government said, but not before he sent a message to the public. In September, Xue, who has 12 million followers on Weibo, appeared in handcuffs and prison garb in a state TV interview and apologized for “irresponsible posts,” saying that “freedom of speech cannot override the law. Separately on April 17, a Chinese court convicted a microblogger for the first time under its new online rumor-mongering laws. Qin Zhihui, a microblogger with 12 separate Weibo accounts, pleaded guilty to spreading lies and was sentenced to three years in prison for inventing a false story about the government paying compensation to a foreign passenger killed in a train crash, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. Jiang, the U.S.-based communication professor, said Weibo continues to be the public forum for hot topics such as the Malaysian aircraft disappearance, but user interest could dwindle if more substantial discussions spread to other platforms. “To be honest, if Weibo had gone public last year or the year before, it would have had better results,” Jiang said. “It was still the hot thing. View All Comments () Tracy Morgan spent seven seasons on 30 Rock playing Tracy Jordan, an amplified, caricatured version of himself. On the show, the Saturday Night Live alum riffed on his extravagant public persona, one that has gotten him in trouble over the years. But for Morgan, the best venue for unabashed self-expression is the stage. Last fall, after 30 Rock wrapped, the comedian shot a new stand-up special, Bona Fide, which will premiere on Comedy Central on April 20. In the hour-long special, Morgan offers sincere insight into his own life and the world around him—with, of course, hilarious, R-rated enthusiasm. The comedian called to discuss the special while grocery shopping, which may seem oddly mundane for a guy with a reputation like Morgan’s. Morgan has a lot of thoughts about the world and the purpose of comedy today, and, mostly, just wants everything he does to be an apt reflection of himself. Right now I’m shopping at Whole Foods with my fiancée. We’re getting some healthy foods right now. I love your outfit in your new special. No, I just like red! Red it my favorite color so I wanted to wear it. I just thought that was my style—red and white. I just like red. It wasn’t about any of that stuff. I just wanted to wear it because it was my vision. I’m good with clothes so I just followed my vision. It looked good, though. You’re rocking a lot of bling, too. Yes, thank you! That’s a bracelet. And I have a $500,000 necklace on. I thought it went well with the lights and everything. It was fun to wear. I own them. I don’t walk around wearing that. That stuff is just for special occasions. Other than that it’s in my safe. I taped it September 7th at the Brooklyn Academy for Music. I just wanted to go back my roots. I hadn’t done anything serious in Brooklyn and I was born and raised not far from there. I wanted to touch base with my roots and give something back to the place where I was born that gave me my start and made me who I am. So that’s what that was. That area of Brooklyn must be so different now than when you were growing up there. Oh, yes it is. It’s very different. And it’s for the better. It’s nice to go back there. It’s live entertainment and there’s nothing like live entertainment because the audience let’s you know. For me, as far as my career milestones, it’s something that really solidifies me as an artist. I’ve been involved in TV and now to do stand-up, it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do in a big way. And I finally got to do it. That’s what it was about. You just envision it. I have an idea of what I want to discuss. And you know a lot of it has to do with what’s going on in the world and what’s going on in your life and your experiences. That’s how you decide. Maybe some of it is your imagination. But it’s not like you sit around and go, “Well, I’m going to talk about this.” It just comes out. In the special, you reference how dark the world is a few times. Is that something I really feel? In some aspects, yeah, it’s getting kind of dark. I think as you grow older in life the things that you see and read in the news [affect you]. But I’m here. I’m alive. So it’s not that bad. But it’s part of the comedy. Uh, no. Come on, no. I don’t live my life that way. But it sounds funny and it’s something me and my friends talk about. And in some aspects, things are getting a little dark out here. Absolutely. Yeah, the children. The young people. It’s important for us to guide them better and give them better guidance, knowledge, wisdom and understanding. It’s important. Like the president said, computers and TV can’t be your child’s best friend. You have to be involved. It all starts at home. That’s what I believe. I’ve been a parent for a very long time. My oldest son is 30 years old. I’ve been around the block for a long time. It’s very important to be in your child’s life and know what’s going on and be there with them. I don’t think a lot of it does. I think a lot of it doesn’t have to do with race. A lot of it has to do with me and my family and my upbringing. Some of it has to do with race because race exists. Yeah, race exists. Racism is still here and it’s doing well. Turn on the news. I don’t think me and my comedy can really change that. Maybe I reach the people I want to reach, you know what I’m saying? But I think yeah, racism is still here. You can’t hold me to the same standard as the president or a school teacher. I’m just a comedian. My job is like Archie Bunker. We make fun it. That’s all I do. I make fun of it like Archie Bunker and George Jefferson. That’s all I’m doing. That’s an interesting way to look at it. We made fun of it back in the day and now we don’t. Everybody’s so sensitive. Everybody’s so damn sensitive about everything. We need to learn to laugh at ourselves because when you don’t laugh you cry. And I don’t feel like crying. We need to make fun of it. Archie Bunker made fun of it. Back in the day we made fun of our bigotry and our sexism and all of these things. Now you can’t say anything about anything. When I say it’s getting dark, to me, that’s what I mean. It is dark when you can’t speak on anything without being punished. I don’t think that’s cool. You can’t hold a comedian to the same standards as the president or a school teacher. We’re comedians—we’re supposed to make fun! It seems like our sense of humor is fading. No. Because as long as I’m doing it in the spirit of Lucille Ball and Jackie Gleason and George Carlin and Richard Pryor and Flip Wilson and all the other comedy gods that came before me, I’m okay. I know my spirit is not mean and I have a very good spirit and a funny spirit. As long as I’m doing what I’m doing onstage in the spirit of those who came before me so that I may do this, I’m good. I have no idea. I just know that it’s not easy now. You’re mentioned the president a few times. I don’t have any opinion on that because I’m not into politics. I’m just not. I love everybody. To me, politics is a pile of tricks. That’s a pretty good saying. I’ve never been into politics. Just because he’s black I’m not going to get into it. I’m going to stick to what I believe in and I just don’t believe in politics. I’m not for that. God bless those who are. Look, I’d vote for common sense if I thought anybody had any. I don’t want to speak on that right now because it’s still in concept mode and all that. I don’t want to jinx it. I’m on tour right now. I’m doing a tour for Live Nation starting next month. It’s called Tracy Morgan: Turn It Funny. Because we gotta turn all of this stuff funny. I’m seeing a theme here. You know, when people have one perspective and you bring them another perspective that’s pretty funny people go, “Oh, that’s another perspective. That’s another way of looking at it.” When you say something to somebody in a straight way they might not take it like that. When you make them laugh about it, they lighten up a little. And that’s the point. Every night is different because my spirit is different. My energy may be different. But every day I get onstage is different so every performance is different. I can feel them. I have my finger on the pulse. So I can feel it if it’s a weak pulse. If the crowd is low energy, I’ll just bring the energy up. I’ll raise my energy. I get them involved! For me, once I’m onstage I just want the audience to identify and relate to me. I humanize myself. I make me one of them so we’re all doing the dance together. I let them know, “Listen, if you get in my cab I’m not going to be shaky. I’m going to get you to your destination. You paid for a ticket to laugh and that’s what you’re going to do. But not only are you going to laugh, but I want to inform you. I want to enlighten you.” That’s what Richard did to me. When they’re sitting there I want to bless them with that insight and enlightenment, you know what I’m saying? Not only are you going to have fun but I’m going to show you some facts too. Some facts about me. Stand-up is all about my perspective. It’s personal. It’s about me. When I’m onstage I’m going to show you who I am. I’m going to give you some facts about me and where I’m from and how I see life. I gotta talk about life how I see it. A couple months. Until I’m satisfied. It’s like making good love! You know when you’ve had enough and you’re ready for a cigarette. When I need a cigarette then I know I’m done. Yeah, I’m with my fiancée and my daughter. She’s asleep. We’re getting some healthy food and then we’re gonna go home and eat lunch and then relax. My daughter is nine months now. She just came home from her nine-month check-up so she’s sleeping and cranky. Absolutely. Having a daughter makes you see things in a different way. You have to see how you’re carrying yourself because there’s a little girl. There’s not a little boy, there’s a little girl. I think I’m a little more overprotective. I guess so! I can’t call it yet but absolutely. This is my only girl. So I don’t care what it takes to protect her. You can call it what you want to call it. As long as you treat her the same way I treat her, like my princess, I don’t mind. I don’t want to hold you up while you’re finishing shopping. I like this interview! I like this interview. I just think that the questions were awesome and engaging and they allow me to be me. Thank you! I didn’t really have an agenda. I just was curious to talk to you. Well, that’s what it is. That’s how the best stuff comes out. When I get onstage I don’t really have an agenda. I’m just doing me onstage. And I appreciate the audience for allowing me to be me.
